Internet governance

Internet Governance includes the application of shared principles, standards, rules, decision-making and operational procedures that outline how governments, private sector and civil society have changed the way they use internet.

Internet Governance is a multidisciplinary subject that deals with issues related to the development of technological infrastructures and protocols, as well as with problems concerning the use and development of web-conveyed applications in order to preserve Internet as an "open" network for "development and innovation”.

Internet Governance includes the following areas:

  • Infrastructures and Standardisation (telecommunications infrastructures, technical standards, network neutrality, Internet of things/IoT, web standards, IP addresses, domain name systems, root zones, cloud computing)

  • Security (cybersecurity, cybercrime, critical infrastructures, online child safety, encryption, spam, digital signatures)

  • Human rights (freedom of expression, privacy and data protection, rights of persons with disabilities)

  • Legal issues (arbitration, copyright, trademarks, labour law)

  • Economic issues (e-commerce, e-money and virtual currencies, consumer protection, taxation)

  • Development (access, digital divide, capacity building)

  • Socio-cultural issues (content policies, cultural diversity, multilingualism, online education)
