Italy, through the Agency for Digital Italy AgID, has joined the 50-in-5 campaign, a global initiative supporting countries in the development and adoption of safe, inclusive and interoperable digital public infrastructure (DPI).
Italy’s participation was announced on 21 September, during the 50-in-5 Milestone Event, held in New York on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81).
By joining 50-in-5, Italy strengthens its commitment to international cooperation on digital transformation and to the development of digital public infrastructure capable of supporting accessible, efficient and trusted public services for citizens and businesses.
Over the past years, Italy has developed a broad ecosystem of national digital public infrastructure and enabling platforms. These include digital identity solutions such as SPID and CIE, the National Digital Data Platform (PDND), supporting interoperability and secure data exchange among public administrations, the development of the Italian Digital Wallet (IT-Wallet) and Cruscotto Italia, a platform designed to support data-driven monitoring and decision-making.
These infrastructures are key components of Italy’s digital transformation strategy and contribute to simplifying interactions between citizens, businesses and public administrations, while promoting interoperability, security and the once-only principle in the provision of public services.
The Agency for Digital Italy (AgID) plays a central role in this ecosystem by contributing to the definition of technical rules, standards and governance frameworks supporting and coordinating the digital transformation of the Italian public administration.
Italy’s participation in 50-in-5 will provide an opportunity to share the experience gained in developing and governing national digital public infrastructure, while learning from the approaches, solutions and good practices developed by other countries participating in the campaign.
The initiative will also support further cooperation on areas such as interoperability, open standards, reusable digital solutions and digital public goods (DPGs), helping countries build digital infrastructures that are sustainable, inclusive and adaptable to different national contexts.
"Joining the 50-in-5 campaign represents an important opportunity for Italy to contribute to a growing international community committed to building safe, inclusive and interoperable Digital Public Infrastructure” said Mario Nobile, Director General of AgID. “We are ready to share the experience developed through our national digital ecosystem and, at the same time, to learn from the solutions and approaches adopted by other countries. International cooperation is essential to ensure that digital transformation translates into better, more accessible and trusted public services".
